Palmer located a small two-story home on 13 acres, while yachting in Little Sarasota Bay. She purchased the home for her personal beach cottage and achieved a spectacular result in an extensive remodel headed by the Chicago architect Thomas Reed Martin. When completed, “The Oaks” contained 31 rooms, 9 baths, 12 bedrooms and a staff of 70 to properly maintain to Palmer's impeccable standards.
