A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
Referred to as the region's greatest natural asset, Bertha Matilde
Honore Palmer, one of Sarasota's original “snowbirds” would be
pleased that her legacy of good taste and refinement live on in The
Oaks. After the death of her husband, she became enamored with
Florida's winter climate and in 1910 purchased an 80,000 acre tract
along Sarasota Bay. Palmer, a renowned Chicago socialite and the
regions largest landholder, rancher and developer, at the turn of
the 20th century, touted the area as being as beautiful as any in
the State of Florida.
Palmer located a small two-story home on 13 acres, while yachting in
Little Sarasota Bay. She purchased the home for her personal beach
cottage and achieved a spectacular result in an extensive remodel
headed by the Chicago architect Thomas Reed Martin. When completed,
“The Oaks” contained 31 rooms, 9 baths, 12 bedrooms and a staff of
70 to properly maintain to Palmer's impeccable standards.
This renowned Chicago socialite established the foundation for a
lifestyle and abundance for generations to come, in The Oaks.
Expanded to include 1,000 acres, bordered by Little Sarasota Bay,
now represents the 3 neighborhoods of The Oaks.
